You cannot believe everything you see on TV, but some things are true. For instance, you very well could be paying too much for car insurance. That doesn’t necessarily mean you should switch your insurance to the one being advertised, but it does mean you probably out to do a little checking around and getting some comparative quotes. You may very well be able to save several hundred dollars.
What should you do? It’s not too difficult. It may take a little time, but remember, you may end up saving a pretty good chunk of change.
First – Getting Started (and staying with it)
Determine that you will see this process through. Granted, there are many other more exciting things that one can do than comparison shop for car insurance. But can you think of something else that might be able to save you several hundred dollars? Hopefully this will be sufficient motivation to keep you going through some of this (dare I say it?) drudgery.
Second – Determine how much coverage you need.
You are going to want to be sure to be comparing apples with apples. So right up front, know what coverage you are going to be comparing. Making this decision actually goes beyond the scope of this article to explain. But here is the best place to start: Each state has minimum requirements for insurance coverage for motorists. Make a list of these coverages and the minimum amounts required. From there you may decide to raise some of the coverage amounts.
Third – Know your current status
There are a couple of things about your present status that are important pieces of information. One is the status of your present driving record. Tickets on your driving record do affect the insurance rates that you will get. Check with your state’s DMV to see what tickets might be there and how soon they will be removed. If it they will be gone in the near future, it is worth your while to wait until they do before pursuing any insurance quotes.
The other information you need is the details on your present auto insurance coverage. Find out exactly what types of coverage you have and in what amounts. While your at it, get these costs in both monthly and annual rates. This becomes the amount you are trying to beat when you finally get some quotes.
Fourth – Get your quotes
You will probably need to plan for about an hour or little more for this task. In addition to your present insurance information (from step 3), you will also want to have your driver’s license number and vehicle registration. Get started with online insurance quotation services. These are not difficult to find. Fill out the forms with your information and you can get comparative quotes.
Something to know about this process is that in some states it is very difficult to get online quote. It will be quicker to just pick up the phone and call. Other companies will not give an instant quote but will send you an email. Still others will put you in contact with a local agent who will provide the quote.
Now you are equipped with some very useful information. Be sure you have both annual and monthly rates for these premiums for a true “apples to apples” comparison. From here you can look beyond the rates to things like additional discounts offered and at the insurance carriers themselves.
